Harvard ex-president Summers Steps Down from ChatGPT Maker's Leadership

Corporate Departure
The economist stated he would retreat from public positions after Congressional panel disclosed his repeated communications with the financier

One-time economic leader Lawrence Summers is departing from the directorate at the ChatGPT creator, just days after a series of digital correspondence between him and deceased financier Jeffrey Epstein became widely known.

The economist remarked in a statement that he was "thankful for the opportunity to have contributed, excited about the potential of the organization, and eagerly await tracking their development".

The prominent academic, who formerly presided over the prestigious university, stated on Monday that he would be scaling back from public roles due to his connections with Epstein.

Message Exchange

The newly public emails showed that the official corresponded with Jeffrey Epstein until the eve of his 2019 apprehension for suspected sex trafficking of underage individuals.

In another announcement, the AI firm expressed it understood Summers' choice to resign.

"We value his many contributions and the perspective he provided to the Board," the company remarked.

Political Context

This announcement arrives after both chambers of the legislative branch agreed on this week to pass a bill that would compel the federal prosecutors to disclose its files on Jeffrey Epstein.

The legislation will afterward head to the office of US President Donald Trump for approval. The President has said he expects to approve the measure, after reversing his view on the issue following pressure from his followers.

Message Details

A collection of Epstein-related messages disclosed by the legislative panel days ago referenced several well-known personalities in the billionaire's previous network, without implying any criminal activity by those people.

The messages revealed that the professor and Epstein often met for meals, with Epstein often attempting to introduce Summers to notable world leaders.

Personal Response

After the emails were made available with the general audience, the former official stated he assumed "full responsibility for my ill-advised choice to persist in corresponding with the financier".

He added that he desired "to restore trust and repair bonds with the people nearest to me".

Previous Positions

The professor occupied leadership roles under party leaders; functioning as treasury secretary under President Clinton, and as head of the National Economic Council under Barack Obama.

He presided over the university from 2001 to 2006 and continues to be a academic there. When announcing his step-down from public duties recently on Monday, he indicated he would continue his teaching commitments.

Additional Consequences

Following the economist's declaration on Monday, the Center for American Progress, a liberal policy institute in DC where Summers was a researcher, confirmed that the economist was no longer connected with the institution.

Summers became part of the directorate of OpenAI, which creates the AI chatbot, in the previous year - following a failed attempt to remove its top executive the company leader.
