I got flooded with emotion really.” ‘Things Have Gone So Quickly’ While Southampton was instrumental in her development, a critical choice at 15 was vital for her prospects. The gifted youngster was also a keen cricketer – her dad Will played for Hampshire – but eventually had to pick one of the sports just as she was earning a place in Southampton's first-team squad. She chose football. “It presented a dilemma. Juggling both became impossible,” Kendall commented in a previous media conference. “Growing up, I had a passion for cricket. The decision was genuinely tough. I went back and forth, but when the time came, I understood I enjoy football a bit more.” Growing up admiring Chelsea and Frank Lampard’s goal-getting midfield exploits, Kendall is starting her own path with comparable attacking instincts. Her ability to handle first-team football alongside a psychology degree indicated the mental fortitude and commitment required for the top level. The club did their utmost to keep her, but with her deal up, Villa seized the opportunity to bring her to the top flight. Within months the Winchester-born player has established herself, becoming a regular in the top flight and breaking into the England squad. “She shows consistency and that's not easy when you just come into a new environment and into the WSL with Aston Villa,” said Wiegman. “Everything has happened at breakneck speed, but her ability to sustain her high standards is truly notable.” Kendall certainly enjoyed herself at St Mary's, hitting the crossbar later in the first half and almost teeing up Villa team-mate Missy Bo Kearns for a goal, before Alessia Russo added a second with an injury-time penalty. She came off after an hour to a roar from the home crowd and the enthusiastic voice of the stadium announcer proclaiming that she was “Southampton's very own”. With 29 Southampton goals to her name, she commented, “The trust and consistent playing time I received from 16 proved vital. “It was the consistent trust they showed in me as a player and the belief. I felt like I was ready for [the next step]. “I knew that I had to go in [to England] and prove why I should be playing at this level. The speed of the game is quicker and it was like going up a division.” Acknowledgment of Her Football Intelligence Prior to her 2025 transfer, Kendall played 103 games for Southampton. Kendall has made an instant impression at international level, with observers stating she has just “has the quality” as a midfielder and looks like a “born talent”. While mindful of protecting her young star, Wiegman is confident due to Kendall’s humble and professional attitude.
