đ Share this article Three Lions Coach Shares His Approach: For England, the Jersey Must Be a Cape, Not Protective Gear. Ten years back, Anthony Barry was playing in League Two. Today, he is focused on helping the head coach claim the World Cup trophy next summer. His journey from athlete to trainer started through volunteering with the youth team. He remembers, âEvening sessions, a partial pitch, organizing 11-a-side ⊠deflated balls, scarce bibs,â and it captivated him. He had found his calling. Staggering Ascent His advancement stands out. Starting as Paul Cookâs assistant, he built a standing through unique exercises and excellent people skills. His club career included elite sides, plus he took on coaching jobs abroad across multiple countries. His players include big names such as top footballers. Currently, in the England setup, he's fully immersed, the âpinnacleâ as he describes it. âDreams are the starting point ⊠But Iâm a believer that dedication shifts obstacles. You envision the goal then you break it down: âHow can we achieve it, gradually?â We dream about winning the World Cup. But dreams wonât get it done. We have to build a systematic approach that allows us to maximize our opportunities.â Obsession with Details Dedication, focusing on tiny aspects, characterizes his journey. Putting in long hours day and night, they both test boundaries. Their strategies include mental assessments, a heat-proof game model for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and building a true team. He stresses the national team spirit and dislikes phrases including "pause". âYouâre not coming here for a holiday or a pause,â Barry notes. âWe needed to create an environment that attracts the squad and they're pushed that itâs a breather.â Driven Leaders The assistant coach says along with the manager as highly ambitious. âWe aim to control all parts of the match,â Barry affirms. âWe strive to own the whole ground and that's our focus many of our days on. We must not only to stay ahead of the trends and to lead and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And itâs to make the complex clear. âWe get 50 days alongside the squad ahead of the tournament. We have to play an intricate approach that gives us a tactical advantage and explain it thoroughly during that time. Itâs to take it from idea to information to understanding to action. âTo build a methodology enabling productivity in that window, we have to use the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. When the squad is away, we need to foster connections among them. We have to spend time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. If we limit ourselves to that time, we won't succeed.â Final Qualifiers Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches for the World Cup preliminaries â versus Serbia in London and Albania in Tirana. They've already ensured their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. Yet, no let-up is planned; quite the opposite. This is the time to strengthen the squad's character, for further momentum. âWe are both certain that our playing approach should represent the best aspects from the top division,â Barry says. âThe athleticism, the flexibility, the physicality, the work ethic. The Three Lions kit needs to be highly competitive but light to wear. It should feel like a cape and not body armour. âTo ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to move and run like they do every week, that resonates with them and lets them release restrictions. They need to reduce hesitation and increase execution. âThere are morale boosts for managers in the first and final thirds â building from the defense, pressing from the front. Yet, in the central zone in that part of the ground, we believe play has stagnated, particularly in the Premier League. Coaches have extensive data these days. They understand tactics â mid-blocks, deep blocks. We are focusing to focus on accelerating the game through midfield.â Thirst for Improvement His desire for development knows no bounds. When he studied for the top coaching badge, he had concerns about the presentation, since his group contained luminaries like Lampard and Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he went into difficult settings he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail locally, and he trained detainees during an exercise. He completed the course with top honors, and his research paper â focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays â was published. Lampard included convinced and he brought Barry on to his staff at Stamford Bridge. After Lampard's dismissal, it was telling that Chelsea removed most of his staff while keeping Barry. His replacement at Chelsea took over, and, four months later, he and Barry won the Champions League. When he was let go, the coach continued under Graham Potter. However, when Tuchel returned at Munich, he recruited Barry from Chelsea to work together again. English football's governing body consider them a duo like previous management pairs. âI haven't encountered anyone like him {in terms of personality and methodology|in character and approach|
