For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the recollections of Vecna. Their quest for a way out in episode 6 has them relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that could contain the means to overcome him once and for all.

The Discovery in the Cavern

After locating Max in the world dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is taking refuge in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. A clever observation a telescope pilfered from Henry's old home lets Holly see that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. Matching her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a deep mine shaft.

They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry find an wounded, fearful individual. Attempting assistance, the man fires a gun, striking Henry in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly questions through tears. Essentially, yes, but the trauma wasn't just a simple act of survival.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which transported a warship into a dimension dubbed the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the sole survivor was the captain, who emerged in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

This man's son, Martin Brenner, sought to replicate this experiment in remote Nevada. One of his scientists stole research materials to give to the Russian agents, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the tunnel was that very thief.

So, What's in the Case?

Considering what is understood of the doctor's experiments, the case would assuredly have vials of the altered blood. As shown, Henry is wounded and bleeding. It's probable he was infected upon contact with the blood, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would genetically impart to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the case could have held strange particles that eventually found its way to the Hawkins lab, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he battles the control of a sinister presence, reminiscent of how the character Will was possessed by the shadow monster in an earlier season.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror associated with the mine shows how profoundly traumatic the incident was for him. Even as he controls the army of monsters and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him lingers. Fear is his tool, and the series is building toward a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to gain strength.

This journey has effectively disarmed Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what his enemy truly fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the series finale to come.
